As summer approaches and outdoor work and activities increase, it is important to stay aware of
the dangers posed by overhead and downed power lines. Listed below are some safety tips to
help you avoid serious injuries and keep those around you safe.

● If your vehicle contacts a power line, remain inside the vehicle and do not attempt to exit.
Once the vehicle is touching an energized line, stepping out could make your body a path
to the ground and result in electrocution. Stay in the vehicle and call 9-1-1 so the proper
utility company can respond and shut off the power.
● If you encounter an accident or emergency involving a downed power line, warn others
from a safe distance to remain inside their vehicles unless there is an immediate threat,
such as fire. Do not approach the area, as the ground and nearby objects may be
energized.
● Keep in mind that non-metallic materials such as tree branches, ropes, and hay can still
conduct electricity, especially when moisture, dirt, or dust buildup is present.
● Even without direct contact, electricity can jump or “arc” to nearby objects. Always keep
equipment and machinery at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines.
